Recreation Therapy Internship - Newberg, Or

Friendsview Retirement Community in Newberg, Oregon is seeking applications for a summer intern in the Activities/Social Services program in our Health Services Department.  Friendsview is a Continuing Care Retirement Community that offers a full continuum of senior living and health services including 31 Residential Care apartments (Assisted Living) a 14-unit memory care neighborhood and a 29-bed Intermediate Nursing Care Center.  Friendsview has a reputation for providing the highest standards of care and service to residents and our Care Center has had 3 deficiency-free surveys over the past 4 years.   Friendsview is a faith-based Christian organization that was founded by the Friends Church (Quaker) and maintains strong ties with the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends.  

Please visit our website at www.friendsview.org for more information about our community and for information about this internship including how to apply.  (  click on Resources >  Employment Opportunities) This internship is approximately 14 weeks long, beginning in May or June (dates and terms may be flexible in order to meet the program standards of specific education programs).  Interns will work a 40 hour week and a stipend is provided along with a meal option.  

Our program is staffed by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who serves as the Social Services and Activities Coordinator.  This internship offers the opportunity to work with families, volunteers and other community resources to provide meaningful therapeutic programs for residents in all of our Health Service areas.  

Essential Functions of the position include:
  • Develop and reflect an awareness of the community’s mission and work in a way that is consistent with the shared values of the community.
  • Support Friendsview’s person-centered care philosophy of the Health Services Department and be committed to upholding the dignity, choice and independence of each resident.
  • Assist with planning, scheduling, leading and coordination programs which are suited to the needs, capabilities and interests of the residents
  • Assisting with developing  monthly/weekly schedules and informing residents, staff and families of upcoming programs
  • Maintain effective communication with supervisor regarding any questions or concerns and participate in debrief at end of each week
  • Participate in the facilities in-service education program
  • Develop an awareness of the larger organization, various departments and understand their role in the community
  • Work with staff and volunteers in finding methods to encourage and allow residents to take an interest in life and community engagement
  • Become familiar with facility and federal policies, regulations and assessmets
  • Learn to facilitate 1:1, small, and large group activites
  • Complete at least one special project during internship


Required Knowledge, Experience and Qualities
  • Must be a current student in good standing in an accredited Recreational Therapy or Therapeutic Recreation program
  • Must have positive referral from Academic advisor
  • Ability and attitude to get along with residents, employees and supervisor
  • Desire to work with older adult population and appreciation for both their needs and life-experience.
  • Must have the ability to accept an increasing level of responsibility and independence in professional role
  • Professional presentation and behaviors including a neatly groomed and well-dressed personal appearance



Physical & Mental Demands
  • Able to walk, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, lift 35 lbs, and to maintain an active pace for a full day.
  • Must be able to effectively engage with individuals with varying degrees of cognitive and social impairment with productive outcome


All interns must pass the Oregon DHS Criminal background check, drug screen and a TB test.

Adaptive Recreation Internship - Eugene

The overall goal of an internship with Adaptive Recreation is to give students a valuable experience in a community recreation program that provides services to persons with disabilities. Programs are designed for people with developmental, physical and/or emotional disabilities and are varied for different age groups. Program highlights include wheelchair sports such as water skiing, handcycling, snow skiing, adapted fitness classes, integrated youth programs, outdoor recreation, special events and social clubs.
A Therapeutic Recreation Internship is generally a 14 week/40 hour per week commitment that includes an individually designed internship based on program needs, NCTRC standards, the student’s university or college requirements and the intern’s goals and objectives. Supervision is provided by a full-time certified therapeutic recreation specialist. Interns will assist Adaptive Recreation instructors in planning and implementation, provide 1:1 participant support and provide group leadership under supervision of the instructor. The student will be expected to perform leadership, planning, supervision and administrative duties as a member of the therapeutic recreation staff. The position is designed to enable students to utilize their specific experience, skills and interests while blending these into the needs of the programs at Adaptive Recreation Services.

Attach a short narrative which includes your internship objectives and a brief statement explaining your interest in working with people with disabilities. After your material is reviewed by the Adaptive Recreation staff, an appointment will be made with you for a telephone interview. Following the telephone interview, you will be notified within two-three weeks of acceptance or denial.
