2580 Hilyard St.
Eugene, OR 97405

The overall goal of an internship with Adaptive Recreation is to give students a valuable experience in a community recreation program that provides services to persons with disabilities. Programs are designed for people with developmental, physical and/or emotional disabilities and are varied for different age groups. Program highlights include wheelchair sports such as water skiing, handcycling, snow skiing, adapted fitness classes, integrated youth programs, outdoor recreation, special events and social clubs.

A Therapeutic Recreation Internship is generally a 14 week/40 hour per week commitment that includes an individually designed internship based on program needs, NCTRC standards, the student’s university or college requirements and the intern’s goals and objectives. Supervision is provided by a full-time certified therapeutic recreation specialist. Interns will assist Adaptive Recreation instructors in planning and implementation, provide 1:1 participant support and provide group leadership under supervision of the instructor. The student will be expected to perform leadership, planning, supervision and administrative duties as a member of the therapeutic recreation staff. The position is designed to enable students to utilize their specific experience, skills and interests while blending these into the needs of the programs at Adaptive Recreation Services.

The application process includes submitting a resume with work and volunteer experience, current and permanent address and phone, relevant experience and training and any other information you feel is important. Attach a short narrative which includes your internship objectives and a brief statement explaining your interest in working with people with disabilities. After your material is reviewed by the Adaptive Recreation staff, an appointment will be made with you for a telephone interview. Following the telephone interview, you will be notified within two-three weeks of acceptance or denial.
