This employment opportunity is with Oregon State Hospital, which is part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). These positions are located in the Rehabilitation Services Department in Salem. There are four full-time positions in the Geriatric Treatment Mall and one full-time position in the Forensic Recreation Center. This position is represented by a union.
This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to fill future vacancies as needed.
INTRODUCTION

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult specialty populations from throughout the state. Inpatient services are currently licensed at 681 beds on 19 hospital units and residential services at 96 beds on 3 units. OSH also offers community outreach services, specialized evaluations, and has a consumer support office.
QUALIFICATIONS

Two Years of experience guiding recreational events and activities (e.g. sports event referee, overseeing or teaching swimming and/or aquatic exercises, organizing tournaments, planning community outings, planning and teaching crafts, etc.).
A Bachelors degree in Physical Education or a field of recreation may be substituted for two years of experience.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The primary purpose of this position is to work independently in establishing a positive leadership role that teaches the benefits of wellness and physical activity as well as the use of recreational and leisure activity as a contributor to emotional and physical well being. This position also enhances the therapeutic milieu by providing leisure, recreational and social activities. Employees in this classification are generally assigned to work in one of the following patient population programs:
Geriatric Treatment Mall is part of the Geriatric Treatment Program who serves older adults with psychiatric/medical disorders who require intensive nursing and psychiatric care not available in a less restrictive setting. One unit serves adults who are brain-injured or multiply disabled. Specific duties include: The person in this position assists in leading groups for treatment programs. Works with supervision of rehabilitation staff to assist with individual treatment programs as assigned. Prepares supplies and equipment for groups as assigned. Documents participation in group as assigned and according to GTS policy.
Forensic Recreation Center is part of the Forensic Psychiatric Services which includes a full array of clinical programs is offered including evaluation of criminal responsibility and the ability to aid and assist in one’s own defense and patients who are adjudicated guilty but mentally ill and who are committed to the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB). It also serves patients with mental or emotional disturbances, cognitive skill deficits, substance abuse, and sex offenders.
Specific duties include: The person in this position will assist clinical staff in groups and therapeutic activities. Maintain and track an up to date work/events schedule. Report behaviors, participation levels and needs of individual patients to unit staff and Rehabilitation Staff. Evaluate, create, develop and vary new recreation opportunities. Evaluate recreation activities and programming for efficacy, feasibility and patient satisfaction. Prepare, allocate and distribute recreation equipment, supplies and material after activities and programming. Collect, clean, and stow recreation equipment, supplies and materials after activities and programming. Monitor the condition of recreation equipment, supplies and materials, request repair or replacement as needed. Meet with Rehabilitation Manager regularly. Report and coordinate work functions with unit staff and RSD staff.
Major Duties Include: The people in these positions will provide structure, implement, plan, facilitate and lead recreation activities and programming for evenings and weekends. Use behavioral management skills in working with patients in accordance to policies in procedures and document participation activities, events groups and 1:1’s. Understands and applies rehabilitation values and processes in recreation activities and programming. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies and tracks recreation equipment and materials. Provide resources for special equipment for patient’s leisure needs, i.e., sports equipment and craft supplies. Obtains specific certification relating to assigned programming activates.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working with physically disabled, mentally ill or emotionally disturbed patients, including those who may be aggressive on a daily basis. Needs to be able to interact with staff and patients, give and receive instructions, and planed and organize tasks.
Must be able to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends. May be required to work hours subject to change with little notice. May be required to work hours that exceed th eassigned schedule, i.e., double shift or a dirrerent shift in addition to assigned schedule.
Needs to be able to walk, stand for periods, run and lift 15-50 lbs. Needs to be able to interact with staff and patients, give and receive instructions, and planed and organize tasks.
You must have a valid Oregon driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. If not, you must be able to provide an alternate method of transportation.
